Syrian Cheese Balls (Jibneh maqliyeh)

These little cheese balls are a classic Middle Eastern appetizer made with labne, panko or regular/fine dry breadcrumbs, za’atar, melted butter and sometimes walnuts. They can be deep-fried or baked in the oven but either way they’re delicious. Serve them with a generous sprinkle of za’atar or other spices, a drizzle of olive oil and lemon wedges on the side.

1

Ingredients

  • - 2 cups labne (strained yogurt cheese)
  • - 1/2 cup panko or regular/fine dry breadcrumbs
  • - 2 tablespoons za’atar
  • - 1/4 cup melted butter

Preparation

  1. 1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. 2. In a medium bowl, combine the labne, panko and za’atar. Mix until well combined.
  3. 3. Using your hands, form the mixture into small balls about 1 inch in diameter and place them on the prepared baking sheet.
  4. 4. Brush each ball with melted butter and bake for 15 minutes or until golden brown and crispy on the outside.
  5. 5. Serve warm with a sprinkle of za’atar, a drizzle of olive oil and lemon wedges on the side. Enjoy!

Notes

You can also deep fry these cheese balls instead of baking them in the oven if you prefer!
